This residential development showcases modern structural engineering at its best. Specifically, it combines structural steel fabrication, engineered timber, and advanced panel systems. Moreover, it demonstrates how different materials work together to achieve both performance and buildability.
At Riteweld Engineering, we operate from our Oxfordshire base and work nationwide. On this project, we delivered key structural elements. As a result, we can show you how steel, engineered timber, and modern construction systems integrate effectively on site.
Below, we explore the main structural components. Additionally, you can see these elements illustrated in the project images.
Steel and Glulam Roof Trusses with Timber Rafters
The hybrid roof structure stands out as one of this project’s key features. We combined steel and glulam roof trusses with traditional timber rafters. Together, these elements form the primary roof framework.
This approach delivers significant benefits. First, you gain the strength and span capability of structural steel fabrication. Second, you benefit from the aesthetic qualities of engineered timber. Furthermore, glulam offers excellent structural stability while maintaining a natural appearance. Consequently, designers often choose it where they need exposed elements or complex roof geometries.
We prioritized careful coordination between steelwork and timber elements. This ensured accurate load transfer and smooth installation on site.

SIPs Panels with Bespoke Steel Lifting Solutions
We specified Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) to form the roof build-up. These panels sandwich PIR insulation (Polyisocyanurate) between OSB boards (Oriented Strand Board). As a result, they provide both structural capacity and high thermal performance.
To support safe installation, we took an innovative approach. Specifically, we fabricated bespoke red lifting plates in-house at our Oxfordshire facility. These lifting plates enabled safe crane positioning of the SIPs panels. Consequently, we reduced manual handling on site and improved both installation speed and accuracy.
This demonstrates an important principle. Notably, secondary steel components can support the wider construction process, not just the primary structure.

Glulam Beams Supporting Posi-Joists
Within the floor structure, we installed glulam beams to support Posi-Joists. This combination delivers multiple advantages. First, it allows for longer spans. Second, it maintains clear service routes within the floor zone.
Posi-Joists prove particularly effective where services coordination matters. Specifically, they allow mechanical and electrical services to pass through the joist depth. Meanwhile, they maintain full structural integrity. The glulam beams provide the necessary support. At the same time, they keep the structure efficient and adaptable.

Structural Steel Beams and Goalpost Frames
We installed structural steel beams and goalpost frames throughout the building. These elements support large openings and efficiently transfer loads.
Designers commonly use goalpost frames where they need wide openings. For example, they work well for large glazed areas or open-plan layouts. They transfer loads around these openings effectively. Therefore, the structure maintains strength without compromising the architectural intent.
Accurate fabrication and installation prove critical with these elements. Ultimately, tolerances directly affect how loads distribute throughout the structure.

Structural Steel and Timber Integration: A Coordinated Approach
This project exemplifies effective material integration. Specifically, it shows how structural steel fabrication, engineered timber solutions, and modern construction systems work together. Each element plays a specific role. However, success depends on three key factors: early coordination, accurate fabrication, and clear communication between all parties.
At Riteweld Engineering, we regularly deliver residential and commercial projects across the UK. These projects require this level of structural integration. Furthermore, we support schemes from early design stages right through to installation on site.
